52 Week Song Cycle #26

Park Slope (In the Eye) (c) 2010 Mattroi Berger

At the halfway mark this week - 26 out of 52 songs in the Song Cycle are up on the site.  I’m celebrating with a week at Lake George with some friends - we perform Shakespeare in a lakeside park once a year and stay in a chalet a little ways up the mountain.  I’m drooling a little right now just thinking about it - I leave in 3 hours.

Sometimes I find a meaning for what this project is - I named it a Song Cycle after all, a title that suggests some sort of theme or evolution of a plot - but at other times I see it more as homework, exercise of craft.

When I have weeks like this one (deadlines for 3 projects, prep for vacation, driving to Massachusetts and back in 36 hours), that craft sort of goes by the wayside and I end up with whatever is most available in my fingers and on my tongue.  That’s nice every so often, even when I’m trying to push myself to do newer, more challenging things.  It helps me see how far along I’ve come.  As silly as this song is, I don’t know if a lot of its elements would have been readily available to me before I began the cycle, or if recording something so silly would have merited my time.  It’s been a good year so far for songwriting - whether I’ll use any of these songs at a later date or not.  I feel the change, and change’ll do me good.

No, I won’t go back to Park Slope
Cuz that’s where the Devil lives
If suicide were on my mind
Well, then I’d plan the trip
No, I won’t go back to Park Slope
Not till the day I die
And when I do I’ll fuck that Devil in the eye.

Promises are promises to many
Your mama says, you were never very smart
I know all this is getting pretty heavy
But wait till Hipsters stab you in the heart

No, I won’t go back to Park Slope
Cuz that’s where the Devil lives
If suicide were on my mind
That’s where I’d pay my rent
No, I won’t go back to Park Slope
Not till the day I die
And when I do I’ll fuck that Devil in the eye.

Honestly, I’d never thought of any
Stoppages worth playing on in time
If all of this was planned to pinch a penny
Then why not grope a mother fucking dime

No, I won’t go back to Park Slope
Cuz that’s where the Devil lives
If suicide were on my mind
Well, then I’d plan the trip
No, I won’t go back to Park Slope
Not till the day I die
And when I do I’ll fuck that Devil in the eye.

No, I won’t go back to Park Slope
Cuz that’s where the Devil lives
If suicide were on my mind
That’s where I’d pay my rent
No, I won’t go back to Park Slope
Not till the day I die
And when I do I’ll fuck that Devil in the eye.
