We’re Doomed! (c) 2009 Mattroi Berger
We’re Doomed! was written for the FringeNYC 2009-accepted musical i dont <3 u ne more.
The writer and I discussed a number that could support the absurdity of the play’s climax: In a world completely dependant on technology and the internet, when all the servers and satellites switch off, the tech-junkies, needy for a fix, begin turning into brain-hungry zombies. Also, I wanted the song to express some of the morals of the show: Too late, our ensemble realizes that they’ve misused technology and now it’s going to bite them in the butt… er… brains.
I enjoyed writing this song because, honestly - where can you go wrong? Perhaps only by taking the situation too seriously. In that spirit, I begin the song with a 3 part baroche prelude to express the sort of dire situation our ensemble (the last human office workers) would be feeling without their life source. Then, we explode into the funky, riotus fun of the song proper, with all it’s transforming, dancing, and rapping zombies. When the first chorus arrives, it’s a lone officer worker stepping forward - a quiet, solitary moment of understanding… quickly disrupted, of course, by breakdancing ghouls and lyric-spitting fiends. Slowly the stage fills with zombies, lurching towards our singers. The spotlight circle gets tighter and tighter, and the music strips away, until they are left singing a’capella, lonely, huddled together, a tiny island of light in a dark sea of green-grey flesh and hungry fangs. The final note, then - black.
