i dont <3 u ne more (c) 2009 Mattroi Berger
Written for the FringeNYC 2009-accepted musical of the same name, ‘i dont <3 u ne more’ is the ultimate ode to the text message break-up.
The writer needed a tune that expressed the superficial sadness of the tech-happy Daliya concerning her break-up with the nerdy, yet tech-illiterate Ron, while supporting the absurd nature of the off-the-wall show.
I chose the model of old-school country torch song, as it would allow Daliya to directly speak her thoughts with a front of true sadness, while keeping her emotion completely performative - given staging, this could come off as extremely cold and impersonal. The genre also allowed me to play with absurd back-up harmonies, add square dancing rhtyhms (the lovers being carried and swung farther and farther apart) and allow Ron an honestly emotional couplet.
